Introduction to Dance Medicine

The course is comprises of a series of online lectures and a residential weekend held at different locations across Europe. It provides the attendee with a multidisciplinary overview of the dancer and their training/performance workloads as well as learning about intrinsic and extrinsic injury risks. Experts will also lead practical discussions on physiotherapy, nonsurgical-medication-based, and hospital-based (surgical) treatment plans. There is also the opportunity to understand about different dance genres and talk with dancers about their experiences of being injured and going through rehabilitation.

The course will cover

  • the different genres that come under the umbrella term "dance" and the language dancers use to describe movement;

  • the different environments of the company, independent, pre-professional and recreational dancer;

  • epidemiology and aetiology of injuries;

  • psychology of dance and the dancer; 

  • intrinsic and extrinsic injury risks

  • nonsurgical- medication based treatments;

  • injury risks in particular populations: paediatric and older dancers;

  • treating the dancer (self-treatment, physiotherapy, nonsurgical-medication-based, surgical treatments); 

  • physiology of dance and the dancer.

Prevention, Performance Improvement, Recovery

This course is aimed at dance teachers, professional dancers, health practitioners and students in the fields of dance, health and adapted physical activity. It aims to develop specific skills to support the health of dancers throughout their career.

Program:

DAY 1: OBSERVATION, PAIN MANAGEMENT AND CARE IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

Objective: Develop skills in biomechanical observation and pain management of the student in a dance context, with immediate care strategies in the event of injury. Observation and analysis of an advanced level dance class with a focus on anatomical coaching, in order to identify and anticipate the specific needs of dancers.

DAY 2: HEALTH AND PREVENTION IN PEDAGOGICAL AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Objective: Raise awareness of good prevention practices in dance and the importance of an active role in the health of dancers. Principles of prevention and recovery Introduction to injury prevention methods and recovery techniques adapted to dancers.  

DAY 3: MANAGING INJURIES AND PAIN IN THE PROFESSIONAL SETTING OF DANCE

Objective: To provide participants with practical tools to respond to injuries and address pain issues, in order to ensure safe and appropriate care in the professional environment. What to do in the event of an injury in the studio, taking into account the safety and well-being of the student. How to care for dancers during performance periods and appropriate management of injuries to avoid complications.

Sportgeneeskunde, Bilthoven, Netherlands: The venue is just outside of Bilthoven and a longish walk from the central train station (40 minutes). Schipol Airport is the closest airport and by train you need to change at Utrecht to get to Bilthoven. There are numerous hotels close by in Utrecht and a few options available in Bilthoven.
